Make simple oat-free Berry Hay Rabbit Rolls with hay and fresh berries. A practical homemade treat for rabbits.
Safety note
Introduce new foods gradually and speak with your veterinarian before making major changes to your pet's diet.
Ingredients
- 2 cups dried timothy hay, loosely packed
- 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled
- 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
- 1 tablespoon water, if needed for mixing
Equipment
- Mixing bowl
- Spoon
Instructions
Prepare the berries: Rinse the strawberries and blueberries under cool water. Pat them dry, then mash them together in a bowl with a fork until they form a thick puree with small chunks remaining.

Break down the hay: Place the dried timothy hay in a food processor and pulse until it is chopped into short pieces about 1/4 inch long. Avoid turning it into powder.

Combine the mixture: Add the chopped hay to the mashed berries in the bowl. Stir with a spoon, pressing the hay into the fruit until it is evenly coated and starts to hold together. Add a splash of water only if the mix feels too dry to form shapes.

Shape the rolls: Scoop a heaping tablespoon of the mixture and roll it gently between your palms into a small cylinder about 1 inch long and 3/4 inch thick. Repeat with the rest of the mixture, placing each roll on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Arrange for drying: Space the rolls evenly on the sheet so air can reach all sides. If using an oven, set it to the lowest temperature with the door slightly ajar.

Dry the rolls: Place the sheet in a dehydrator at 135 degrees F or in the low oven for 2 hours, turning the rolls once halfway through. They are ready when firm and no longer sticky.

Cool completely: Remove the rolls from the heat and let them sit on the sheet at room temperature for 30 minutes before storing.
