Make a simple fresh vegetable mix with a touch of maple for hamsters, guinea pigs, and other pocket pets. Quick prep, seasonal ingredients.
Safety note
Introduce new foods gradually and speak with your veterinarian before making major changes to your pet's diet.
Ingredients
- 2 medium carrots
- 1 cup broccoli florets
- 1/2 red bell pepper
- 1/2 cup loosely packed spinach leaves
- 1 teaspoon pure maple syrup
Equipment
- Mixing bowl
- Spoon
Instructions
Wash the vegetables: Place the carrots, broccoli, bell pepper, and spinach in a colander and rinse under cool running water. Shake off excess water and pat dry with a clean towel if needed.

Trim and slice the carrots: Cut off the ends of each carrot and slice into thin rounds about 1/8 inch thick. Place the slices in the mixing bowl.

Chop the broccoli: Cut the broccoli florets into small bite-size pieces roughly the size of the carrot rounds. Add them to the bowl with the carrots.

Dice the bell pepper: Remove the stem and seeds from the bell pepper half, then cut the flesh into small squares about 1/4 inch. Add to the bowl.

Tear the spinach: Tear the spinach leaves into smaller pieces by hand and add to the bowl with the other vegetables.

Add the maple and toss: Drizzle the teaspoon of pure maple syrup over the vegetables. Use clean hands or a spoon to gently toss everything until the pieces are lightly coated.

Portion for serving: Spoon the finished mix into small dishes or directly into the pet enclosure in a shallow layer so animals can pick through it easily.
